The Simpsons 213 Homer Vs. Lisa and the 8th CommandmentTimes Watched: 289552Comments: 32Rating:
In 2300 B.C., Moses received the ten commandments from God, among which was Thou Shalt Not Steal. In present day Springfield, Homer gets an illegal cable hook-up, which Lisa refuses to watch, for fear of losing her soul.
God I'm glad she sees the light in She of litle fath and brakes away from that group of brainwashed, mind-controled religus idiots! Also hell is not a swear
Contrast this episode with the scene in S4 'I Love Lisa' where Lisa's conscience is concerned that she is stealing and Homer tells her not to let the little pushy wiener that is her conscience boss her around. Now that's Simpson morality! If only Homer had been more direct in this episode so much trouble could have been avoided (but it would've probably accelerated Lisa's fall into theft... like she does in that episode where Bart is hall monitor)
Here we see Lisa becoming firmly established as the moral centre of the family. Unfortunately no one seems to have told her that The Simpsons only really pay lip-service to the Christian God, and her poor little head is being warped by a narrow-minded sunday school teacher.
I wonder if anyone really appreciates the damage this is doing to Lisa. I'd like to call attention to Lisa's 'vision' of the family in hell. Certainly we've seen these stylistic scenes in the past, mostly from Bart and his childlike imaginiation, but this one seems much less harmless. It's more like an insidious intrusion into her reality. See the fear in her eyes? She really believes that she stands on the brink of hell, and while this may be true from a mythological standpoint, she shouldn't be able to 'see' it quite like that. That's a psychotic episode.
I've never really appreciated how genuinely disturbed Lisa was in the early seasons, or how moral the show could be. But that is definitely the case here.
An overdue thank you to the admins. great site haven't seen the early seasons for ages they are so well written. as a kid i loved the simpsons but watching them as an adult i missed so many jokes as a kid ..... great stuff ....."cable companies are big faceless corporations which make it ok" lmao
you children who complain about the characters and the religious stuff in the sipmsons are forgeting one thing;
ITS A TV SHOW!!!
calm down and laugh at homer being a dumb ass. life will be easier for everybody including yourself
robi_r don't start saying that kind of stuff because I know plenty of atheists and non-religious people who are unbelievably stupid and If you really think religion changes someones intelligence than you are ignorant and if religion is stupid and ignorant it has been preaching nothing but good and happiness to the rest of the world.
